Injecting realism in Bollywood

natural Vinod Khanna in Red Alert.

The character portrayed by Vinod Khanna bears an uncanny similarity to the intellectual ideologue Maoist leader Kobad Ghandy.

Red Alert is a true story, wherein Sunil Shetty plays the role of the main protagonist sucked into the Naxalite movement. Though the Naxalite movement has attracted urban youth and rural masses, there are but a few movies that have been made on the subject since most people are unaware about the movement.

After Mrinal Sen’s Calcutta 71, Khwaja Ahmad Abbas’ The Naxalites starring Smita Patil and Mithun Chakraborty, and Sanjiv Karambelkar’s Lal Salaam, there aren’t many films that talk about the subject.

So, in the day of sex comedies and fictitious action thrillers, a film that depicts reality would be more than welcome.
