Studying Abroad

Dear Madam,
I have completed CA entrance exam (CPT) and also I am studying in B Com degree Final semester. With this degree I would like join CS (Company Secretary) and international qualification CFA from USA institute, so how should I proceed my career after degree. I would like more information on CFA and what are the other international courses available in commerce field?
M R Konade.

Dear Konade,
If you want to register for the company secretary course, you can do so at the Institute of Company Secretaries of India. The Institute has chapters or offices in most of the big cities in India. These centres also hold coaching classes for the exams. The Bangalore chapter is situated on Cunningham road.

Since you are completing your degree, you can skip the foundation program and move on directly to the executive program and after completing the same you can then do the professional program. Exams are held twice a year in the months of June & December.
For other readers who wish to pursue CS after your 10+2 years of study, you would have to do the foundation programme as well which is of 8 month duration.

It is mandatory for every student to attend 30 lectures of 2 hours duration for each subject of Foundation programme, 35 lectures of 2 hours duration for each subject of Executive programme and 40 lectures of 2 hours duration for each subject of Professional Programme.
For detailed information on the subjects, fees, practical training and online registration please visit http://www.icsi.edu

Now, to answer the second part of your question, here is all the information you want on CFA:
CFA prepares you for a career in Investment decision-making and strategy, portfolio and wealth management, institutional investing, and investment analysis.

To enrol in the CFA Program and register for your first exam you must

Have a bachelor's (or equivalent) degree or be in the final year of your bachelor's degree program at the time of registration or have four years professional work experience or have a combination of professional work and university experience that totals at least four years
n Have a valid international travel passport (required for exam registration and admission to the test centre).

Locate an exam centre near you and register for your exam online.
The CFA Program includes a series of three exams that are offered in test centres around the world. These three exams — Level I, Level II, and Level III — must be passed sequentially as one of the requirements for earning a CFA charter. You may register for one exam at a time. Once you have received your exam results, you may register for the next one. If you fail an exam, you have to re-take the exam.

Many Universities across the world offer CFA preparation programs.
For each exam level, plan on at least six months of preparation.
Successful candidates take a minimum of 2 years and an average of four years to complete the program.

Once you have successfully completed the three exams sequentially and accumulated 4 years of approved work experience you can join CFA Institute as a regular member.
As far as the other commerce related International courses go, after your Bachelors, you can pursue a Masters program in any of the specialized fields of Business like Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Human Resource Management, Organisational Behaviour, Entrepreneurship, Real estate Management, Investment Management, Banking, Risk Management, Sustainability, etc.

Dear Madam,
I am pursuing my final year BE in Biotechnology (8th sem). I had long before made a plan of doing my MS in Genetics, especially Stem Cell culture and go ahead with PhD abroad. I also wish to be an entrepreneur in field of Biotechnology.
My current wish is to study more about the Marine biotechnology and as well pursue my wish to become entrepreneur.  I am writing GATE exams in the month of February this year. What are the better options I can keep to pursue my career in? I however do not have interest to do MBA as of now.I am highly confused as to which courses should I have to take up for marine biotechnology and stem cell culture? What are the opportunities I can have and also which are the universities available in India and abroad for the same?
Pruthvi Avadhani

Dear Pruthvi,
You seem to have many questions. I will answer each one separately.

There are many top Universities in the world that offer MS in Genetics / Stem cell / Bio Technology. If you plan to pursue a PhD, it is better you let the University know your intention when you apply for your Masters. Universities prefer students who are keen on pursuing their research and enrolling for a PhD.

Your Gate exam is good for Universities in India. To pursue your Masters abroad you need to take a GRE test and an English test like the TOEFL. Please visit www.ets.org for more information on these tests. As far as MBA is concerned, all the top Universities in the world (except Indian Universities) will require a minimum of 2 years work experience before you apply for the program. The exam you need to take as an entry requirement is GMAT.

There are far too many excellent Universities in India and abroad that offer these subjects. Some of the top Indian Universities that are highly ranked for this subject are Indian Institute of Science, NCBS (National Centre for Biological sciences), BITS Pilani, University of Madras, and Jawaharlal Nehru University etc to name a few. For most of the Indian universities you may have to take an entrance test.
For the Universities in other countries you would need to do the following:

Write a strong statement of purpose with emphasis on why you wish to study in their University and why the interest in the chosen subject. This should be around 1000 to 1500 words.

Show proof of some research work carried out outside the requirement of your regular course work. If you do not have any experience in research, I suggest you start right now during your holidays.

Prepare your resume. Highlight all your academic & extra curricular achievements.

If you have any work experience / internship / summer study experience, enclose the certificates for the same.

Identify 3 referees you will give you a letter of recommendation. At least 2 of them should be academic and from your current education institute. The third can be a work experience letter.

Keep your Passport ready.

And finally keep your BE transcripts, GRE and TOEFL scores handy to start the application process.
