Cleanliness drive, voter awareness campaign held

South Western Railway (SWR), Mysore Division, launched an awareness drive for maintaining cleanliness at railway stations and on trains along with the Dos’ and Don’ts for safe travelling and the need for an eligible voter to exercise his or her franchise without fear or favour, here, on Friday.

Rajkumar Lal, Divisional Railway Manager, formally launched the campaign at the Mysore Railway station by handing out pamphlets to passengers and asking them to help Railways in maintaining a high standard of cleanliness at stations and on trains by properly utilizing the facilities provided at stations and trains. Judicious use of water is very essential, while using of toilets when the train is on the platform is unacceptable, he said.

As per the new law, enforced by the Central government, passengers found either littering or defecating in the railway premises, defacing the notices, pasting of posters or stickers on walls are punishable offences with penalty of up to Rs 500, he added.

‘Own your train’

Later, Lal, addressing media persons, said, the railways was concentrating a lot on the importance for ensuring a clean environment at stations and on trains. He stated that the concept of ‘Own your station’ and ‘Own your train’ was being implemented on Mysore Division where senior officials will be entrusted with the task of inspecting the stations and trains periodically with a view of bringing a perceptible change on ground.

He pointed out many important passenger amenity works like provision of washable aprons at important stations, provision of water coolers at all ‘D’ category stations and where number of passengers dealt is over 1,000 per day will be taken up in the ensuing financial year 2014-15.
