Political leaders in Tamil Nadu, including DMK president M Karunanidhi, on Friday condemned India’s decision to abstain from voting on the US-sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

Karunanidhi said abstaining from voting has resulted in a situation where India has to “hang its head down in shame”.

He added that a country like the US, which is not affected by the war in Sri Lanka, has sponsored a resolution thrice on the issue for the sake of upholding human rights.

Moreover, 23 other countries that do not have any Tamilian connection have even voted for it. In this situation, India’s decision to abstain is “akin to a mother killing her own child”, he said.

On Thursday, India had abstained from voting on the US-sponsored resolution at UNHRC, saying it imposes an “intrusive approach” of international investigative mechanism which was counter-productive, apart from being “inconsistent and impractical”.
