Rain, hailstorm leave  a trail of destruction

Heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds and hailstorm left a trail of destruction in several villages in Bellary and Chitradurga districts on Tuesday night.

Paddy crops were destroyed, several trees uprooted and roofs of many houses collapsed in several villages of Kampli taluk. Paddy crops in Chikkajayaganur, Hampadevanahalli and Devalapur villages have been destroyed. A few trees have been uprooted in Chikkajayaganur, Upparahalli and Dharmasagar villages, while the roofs of several houses have been damaged. Power supply was interrupted, affecting the drinking water supply. 

Heavy rain lashed Ballapura village in Kurugodu taluk on Tuesday night, leaving houses in several low-lying areas inundated. 

Electricity poles were uprooted and roofs of several houses have collapsed. A few houses have been partially damaged and crops cultivated on 1,500 acres of land have been destroyed. 

Papaya trees on 25 acres of land in the surrounding areas of Annehal village in Chitradurga taluk were destroyed in the hailstorm that lashed on Tuesday night. The loss is estimated at Rs 50 lakh. Horticulture officers visited the fields on Wednesday to assess the loss.
