However, in Mumbai the price of new Beetle —— making debut in the Indian market is a completely built unit (CBU) imported from Brazil —— could be in the range of Rs 23 lakh including all the local levies.

Briefing reporters here, Volkswagen’s Passenger Cars Member of Board and Director Neeraj Garg said “The Beetle is the first Volkswagen car people remember about, with its unique shape and reliability. We are excited to bring this iconic car to India after its success across the world for decades.”

India is a key market, he added, for its overall strategic growth plans and the launch of two of its best products will affirm Volkswagen’s commitment to provide the latest technology and high value to Indian customers.

The company is hoping to sell about 500 units a year and if they manage to cross 2000 units, then it would think in terms of assembling it in India. The car would be imported from Mexico in the CBU format, he said. The company has 150 confirmed bookings for the New Beetle and its deliveries would start from Sunday, he said.
The New Beetle is equipped with a 2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine and is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Volkswagen also launched its Touareg —— its sports utility vehicle —— also popularly known as ‘Beast’, priced at Rs 51.85 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
Now it would be stocked in India and hence, readily available, Garg said, adding the Touareg is priced at Rs 51.85-lakh ex-showroom Delhi, he said.
