Last Updated 03 April 2014, 21:50 IST

Protesting against the police inaction against a man who tried to rape a woman relative, a family of five threatened to immolate themselves at Anil Kumble Circle near MG Road on Thursday.

Gurulingaiah, his wife Venkatalakshmamma and their relatives Gurumurthy, Guruvayya and Siddaraju, all residents of Thayyappanahalli near Bidadi in Ramanagara district, descended on the City to stage the protest.

Members of Rajya Nava Nirmana Vedike, however, stopped them and informed the Cubbon Park police, who seized bottles containing petrol. They consoled the family before sending them away.

Gurulingaiah alleged that on April 1, Muthu tried to rape his daughter when she went to throw garbage near a vacant land. Hearing her scream,  passersby rushed to the spot, but Muthu fled the scene.

“The same evening, we went to the Bidadi police station and lodged a complaint, but the police have failed to arrest him till date,” Gurulingaiah said. Ramanagar District Superintendent of Police Anupam Agarwal said an FIR had been registered on April 2 in relation to the case. Two teams have been formed to nab the accused.

As to the alleged police inaction, he said if anyone was found guilty, they would be dealt with sternly.
