Guard shot dead, angry relatives target policemen

A 26-year-old security guard was shot dead by two robbers in northeast Delhi’s Seelampur in the wee hours of Monday. His death led to a violent protest by his relatives in Shastri Park chowk, police said.

The victim has been identified as Latan, who was staying with family in Shastri Park. According to police, he worked as a security guard in Buland Masjid Fish Market.

“At around 3 am, Latan had noticed two men trying to break the lock of a shop in the market,” a police officer said. Latan informed a local police officer who reached the spot.Latan and the officer then confronted the robbers who then opened fire. “Latan sustained a gunshot in his chest, while the police officer managed to nab one of the accused,” the officer added.

Latan was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, but was declared brought dead. His body was handed over to his family on Monday evening.

He is survived by his parents and six siblings. A case of murder has been filed with Seelampur police station.

On Monday morning, Latan’s family members and friends protested near Shastri Park chowk. Police officers also had to face angry local residents who started stone pelting at them and some buses. The situation was brought under control by a mild lathi-charge.
