Kharif production to rise 30 pc in UP

Last Updated 06 December 2009, 10:04 IST

According to fresh figures prepared by the Agriculture Department, kharif production is probably set to cross 120 lakh million-tonne (MT) mark as against 80 to 85 lakh MT estimated earlier, a senior official said.

"Initially a target of 160 lakh MT production of paddy was set at the start of the kharif season.

However, following drought and flood conditions it was estimated that the total production would be reduced to only 80 to 85 lakh MT," Principal Secretary Agriculture Department Rohit Nandan told PTI.
Nearly 33 per cent land could not be sown in the state due to insufficient rains, he added.

"The situation had improved considerably due to late rains in the state," he said.
The late rains helped in recovery of 10 per cent of the unsown area in the state.
As a result total paddy production is likely to cross 120 lakh MT-level, Nandan said.
