Eves' hockey is on the right track: Ritu Rani

Experienced midfielder and India team captain Ritu Rani believes women's hockey is on the right track under coach Neil Hawgood and feels the coming years will be productive for them.

The team is off to a play a three-match test series against Ireland, from April 15-18, ahead of the Champions Challenge 1 in Glasgow, Scotland (April 27-May 4), where  India is placed in Pool A with Korea, Belgium and the host Scotland.

USA, South Africa, Spain and Ireland are placed in Pool B. Ritu said the tour to Ireland would also serve as the starting point of their preparation for the Commonwealth Games, in Glasgow from July 23 to August 3, as well as the Asian Games at Incheon, South Korea, from September 19-October 4.

The team had prepared during the camp in Patiala. “We are going on an international tour after nearly six months.

For the last few months we have been training at Patiala. We have worked hard.  The Champions Challenge 1 will have very tough teams.

We have focussed on our penalty corner conversions, attack and defence. We are eager to go out and execute what we have practiced during the training camp,” Ritu told Deccan Herald.

“Like our men players, we also want to do well at the Commonwealth Games and especially at the Asian Games. It is the dream of every player to represent their country in the Olympics. Indian women players were not able to do so in the past but this time we will give our all to qualify.”

The 18-member squad will have midfielder Sushila Chanu as the vice-captain. Forwards Navneet Kaur and Neha Goyal will be making their international debut. “We have got good balance in the squad.

“We have quite a few experienced players. We have got a good coach in Neil Hawgood. Under him we got to know how the teams world over train. We believe we have grown as players and in the coming years it will be become a very strong side,” Ritu said.
