Indians outbatted and outbowled us, admits Sangakkara

“We were outbatted and outbowled, but mostly outbowled,” Sri Lanka’s skipper said on Sunday after India completed an innings and 24-run win in the final Test to win the series 2-0.

“We created chances right along but our catching let us down at crucial times. We were never able to continuously put pressure on the Indian batsmen. India were always ahead of the game when it came to their batting. You’ve got to be realistic about it and say yes, we were outplayed. You need to put big totals on the board but at the same time, you’ve got to find ways to bowl the opposition out under those totals. In this case, in all three Tests, we were unable to do that.

“2-0 is a realistic scoreline, given the way the Indians played and the way we played, especially in the last two Test matches,” Sangakkara added. “But we are a better side than what the scoreline says. We’ve got to accept the fact that if we don’t play well enough, we are going to be placed in situations like these. India deserve to be the number one team in the world right now,” the Lankan skipper said.

On Muttiah Muralitharan’s poor run, Sangakkara said. “One thing was the inability to bowl with the seam up with the SG ball. That handicapped him with the bounce and the amount of turn he can expect off the pitch. Also, the Indian side is the best side in the world that plays spin.”

Feeling that Sri Lanka were being short-changed when it came to playing the big sides regularly, Sangakkara said he believed financial considerations had a big part to play. “There was a two-tier Test structure being discussed (by the ICC). We were number two at the time, and we were not included in the discussions! Ultimately, it is a question of the money different countries can earn out of playing each other. That’s always going to be a major factor for the ICC as well, unless of course only four countries play Test cricket.”
