954 booked for drunken driving may lose DL

RTOs to be recommended for cancelling licences

The City traffic police have decided to write to the Regional Transport Authorities, recommending cancellation of driving licences of 954 people who were found guilty of drunken driving (DD).

Police had deployed special teams and conducted special drives at 112 places on Friday, to check drunken driving. The drive was conducted from 9 pm on Friday night till 2 am on Saturday.

Police intercepted a total of 14,604 vehicles and subjected the drivers to breath analysis test to ascertain if they were drunk.

As many of 954 drivers, including two women, were found guilty and cases were registered against them. The most number of cases (59) were registered in Kengeri, police said.

Senior police officers also adopted different means to create awareness about the ill effects of  drunken driving. They went to well-known pubs, bars and liquor outlets and explained about the breath analysis test.

The officers also explained the law and the alcohol limit in the blood (30 mg /100 ml). They also distributed pamphlets, creating awareness about the dangers of drunken driving.

Painter killed in accident

A 35-year-old man was killed on the spot after a hit-and-run vehicle ran him over in KR Puram traffic police limits on Sunday night.

The victim was identified as Raju, a painter and a native of Kolar Gold Fields. A resident of KR Puram, he was working at a building on ITI service road, police said. The accident occurred when he was returning to his workplace after dinner.

The impact was such that he was tossed up in the air and died of severe injuries. The driver of the offending vehicle fled the spot, police added.
