K'taka CM must deliver or face music, says Cong

The Congress has asked its Karnataka state unit to ensure the party gets maximum seats in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections or face the consequences. The party is likely to issue the warning to both Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and state unit president G Parameshwara.

Among the southern states, Congress is hoping to get more seats in Telangana and Karnataka. A senior party leader told Deccan Herald that Congress is hoping to follow through with its triumph in last year’s Assembly elections, getting about 20 out of the 28 Lok Sabha seats on offer in Karnataka.

Keeping faith with the state leadership, the party did not interfere in selecting candidates for Lok Sabha polls and largely went by the state unit’s recommendations in deciding its nominees, he said.

With opinion polls giving less than 15 seats for the Congress, the worried central leadership has issued an ultimatum to the state leadership to either ensure 20 seats or own the responsibility for failure. The party has given a freehand to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in picking his cabinet and rolling out welfare schemes. Now, it is the chief minister’s turn to deliver the results the party expects by sending maximum number of LS members, he said.

It is learnt that the party has also issued similar warnings to leaders in Kerala, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Assam, Himachal and Haryana where Congress led governments are in power.
