A novel way of marking 11th day ceremony of a progressive farmer

Ritual turns into a get together of like-minded people

The 11th day ceremony of A S Annegowda, father of ryot leader Sunanda Jayaram, was observed by planting saplings of various species in Arkere village, in the taluk, on Wednesday.

Among families of Raitha Sangha activists in the district, unnecessary expenditure during wedding and other ceremonies is avoided. The money that would be spent on traditional ceremony is used for some other constructive purpose.

Members of Annegowda’s family distributed 300 saplings, including mango, jackfruit, curry leaves, coconut and other varieties, to those who visited their house to express their grief. The saplings were planted across the village in memory of Annegowda.

MLC Marithebbegowda, freedom fighter Boregowda, honorary secretary of District Kannada Sahitya Parishat C Puttaswamy and others were present.

Annegowda’s son A Somasekhar, who is also the president of Taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishat, said, his father believed in simple lifestyle. “My sister Sunanda jumped into the farmers’ movement under my father’s guidance. We have not even printed an invitation card for the 11th day ceremony. We only tried to bring those who were his friends and people who believed in his ideals. We will plan some social activities in his memory,” he said.
