U'khand is better in development than Gujarat, says Rawat

Training his guns on the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat on Wednesday termed Narendra Modi-ruled Gujarat as one of the worst performing states in the country on the human development index.

The much-touted Gujarat model of development is nothing but an inflated balloon, he told reporters in Dehradun.

“The BJP-ruled Gujarat, in fact, figures along with 11 other states at the bottom of the human development index,” Rawat said. Even Uttarakhand which saw one of the worst tragedies in its history last year presents a better model of development than Gujarat, he said.
Drawing a comparison between the two states, Rawat said the amount given to widows as pension in Uttarakhand is Rs 800 while it is a paltry Rs 400 in Gujarat.

“Be it the infant mortality rate in Gujarat which is among the highest in the country or any other parameter of human development index, Gujarat's performance has been one of the poorest,” he said.

Rawat said he was confident that in the next three years, Uttarakhand will emerge as one of the finest models of development in the country.

Talking about his party’s poll prospects, the Chief Minister said, “if the enthusiasm displayed by people at our rallies is an indication, we are going to fare pretty well.”

He said development will be the main poll plank of the Congress in Uttarakhand which has shown tremendous resilience in times of an unprecedented crisis and is already on the path to recovery.

Despite battling the vagaries of the weather, so much has been done for reconstruction and rehabilitation of people in the affected areas, Rawat said.

Citing an instance, he said nearly 300 people who had lost their homes in the calamity have been resettled.

“This is no mean achievement considering the scale of the devastation. Those who have not been resettled so far in new homes have gone for the other option of choosing a land of their own where they would like to be resettled with help from the state government,” the Chief Minister said.
