Muslim Committee seeks CBI probe into ANF firing

It was a well executed encounter by ANF sleuths, alleges leader

Muslim Central Committee President K S M Masood has condemned the incident of the killing of a Muslim youth Kabeer by Anti Naxal Force (ANF) personnel in Sringeri on Saturday and demanded for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter. “We will not agree for the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probe,” he said.

Addressing mediapersons on Sunday, Masood pointed that the bullet was shot on the chest of Kabeer, which suggests that it was a well executed encounter by ANF sleuths. Police have only manipulated the fact, by claiming that the bullet was shot by mistake. Adding to the grief, the family members of Kabeer were attacked by right-wing ‘rowdis’ when they went to Chikmagalur to claim their son’s body into their possession. Why are the police silent when the goons take law into their hands? he questioned.

The Muslim leader firmly said that the Committee is not interested in communicating with the IGP or the deputy commissioner regarding the matter of killing, but demanded for the direct intervention of the chief minister. The home minister will be made responsible for the future consequences, if the government fails to hand over the case to the CBI, he warned.

Rs 30 lakh compensation sought

He said Rs five lakh compensation offered by Chikmagalur district administration to Kabeer’s family was not acceptable, and demanded  for a minimum compensation of Rs 30 lakh to the family, considering the young age of the deceased.

However, Committee Vice President and District Congress Committee In-charge President Ibrahim Kodijal expressed satisfaction over the CID inquiry into the killing. Ministers from Dakshina Kannada and MLA Mohiudeen Bava have interacted with the chief minister and have demanded for CID probe, for which the CM has agreed in-principle, he said.
Meanwhile, he called upon the Muslim youth not to be carried away with emotions and to maintain peace and harmony. Leaders from Ahinda and Jamat-e-Islam were also present.

Missing person traced

One of the persons in the truck, Sarfaraj who was missing after the incident, has been traced on Sunday. Police Commissioner R Hitendra said that Sarfaraj was hiding in a car and was traced later. “We have not arrested him. Umar Farooq is still in police custody and nobody else is injured in the incident. The case is now handed over to CID,” he said.

DC, Khader visit

Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim visited the house of Kabeer at Katipalla and paid condolence to his family. While interacting with Kabeer’s family and local people, he assured of speaking to the additional chief secretary and Chikmagalur deputy commissioner, on considering judicial probe into the matter and offering compensation to the family. He also assured of taking steps to provide treatment to the one who is injured and admitted in the hospital.

Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khader who visited the victim’s family urged for the arrest of ANF personnel who shot Kabeer.
