The Windies, who had bowled out Australia for 439 in their first innings, resumed play with 23 runs on board and finished at 284 runs from 93 overs with eight of their batsmen back in the hut.

With a couple of good starts but no real big score under his belt, Gayle had a point to prove and the skipper did his job to perfection scoring 155 runs in 271 balls with 16 hits to the fence and one over it.

Mitchel Johnson was the pick of the bowlers for Australia. The left-arm seamer scalped four for 85 in 19 overs while Doug Bollinger knocked over two for 36 in 14 overs. Gayle and Dinesh Rampaul (0) will look to stretch their innings on the final day.
