Justice M S Liberhan received a sharp tongue-lashing from deputy leader of the Opposition, Sushma Swaraj, who on Tuesday described him as “an opportunist”.

“It is not a report by a justice, but by an opportunist,” Swaraj thundered in the Lok Sabha and asked Union Home Minister P Chidambaram what favours he had showered on the author of the report to get such a delivery.

Queering the pitch of the debate on the Liberhan Commission, Swaraj said the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru ruled for 17 years, but the Liberhan Commission lasted longer for 17 years and 26 days.

She said the Commission, which was tasked to conclude its report in three months, took 17 years and ended as a damp squib.

“It says neither the Central Bureau of Investigation  and the intelligence agencies nor the Muslim Personal Law Board could provide any evidence, but goes on to conclude that the disputed structure was demolished in a planned manner,” she said.
