The JD(S) State working president, M S Narayana Rao, has been named the party’s interim president, a post which fell vacant after the sudden death of A Krishnappa. Rao represented Gandhinagar in the Assembly twice and was also president of Bangalore City JD(S).

The party’s national president, H D Deve Gowda, told reporters after a condolence meeting for Krishnappa on Saturday that the party would consult senior leaders and wait for results of the general elections before announcing the new State president. In the interim, Rao will be in charge.

Earlier, Gowda said amid tears that Krishnappa’s death was “body blow” for the JD(S). Krishnappa was the “only leader of repute” of the Yadava community, and his death had left a void in the community leadership and in the JD(S), he said. “We have been getting blow after blow. I am hurt today. Krishnappa’s death is a void which I don’t know how the JD(S) can fill,” he added.

Krishnappa’s daughter and Congress corporator from Basavanapura K Purnima, whom her party has expelled for six years for anti-party activities, attended the meeting.
