FIR against Ramdev for anti-Dalit remarks

Last Updated 26 April 2014, 20:24 IST

Yoga guru Ramdev was on Saturday booked for alleged “anti-Dalit” remarks he made while addressing a press conference in Lucknow on Friday.

According to Lucknow police sources, an FIR under relevant sections of the IPC was lodged at the Mahanagar police station, charging Ramdev with trying to influence the polls by making a false statement.

Lucknow SSP Praveen Kumar confirmed that an FIR had been lodged, and that the matter was being investigated.

The FIR was lodged after the police analysed video footage of Ramdev’s statement.

Ramdev had allegedly said Rahul Gandhi visited the houses of Dalits for “honeymoon” and “picnic”. He had also allegedly said Rahul wanted a foreign bride and did not want to marry an Indian girl.

On Saturday, however, the yoga guru clarified that he did not intend to hurt either Rahul or the Dalits, and that he had been misinterpreted. “The statement I made has been misrepresented. The term 'honeymoon period is over' is commonly used in political language. I tried to use it in that sense,” claimed Ramdev.

“I had no intention to insult honourable Rahul Gandhi or Dalit community,” the yoga guru said.
