Slum board 'encroaches on' BBMP land

Last Updated 27 April 2014, 20:12 IST

Usually slum dwellers are blamed for encroaching upon government land in cities and towns but in a rare case, Karnataka Slum Development Board has reportedly encroached upon Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike land in Yelahanka.

The shocking fact came to fore on Friday when Bangalore Mayor B S Satyanarayana and other officials visited Yelahanka to see the progress made in the installation of bio-methanisation plant.

While the work is under way and would take 15 days for the plant to become operational, what shocked the mayor was encroachment of BBMP land around the plant by the Slum Development Board, which is meant to evict slums and ensure decent living conditions for the urban poor.

The mayor told Deccan Herald, “The encroachment by Slum Development Board is the biggest hindrance to operatonalise biomethanisation plant. We will clear the encroachment.”

The mayor would write to the board on Monday, asking it to give up its claim over the Palike land.
