Cousin arrested for boy's murder

A five-year-old boy, who was found dead near a drain after being kidnapped from north-east Delhi’s Wazirabad on Friday, was allegedly killed by his cousin and his associate. The two have been arrested, said police on Sunday.

It appears the accused cousin, Amit Gupta, had kidnapped the victim to demand a ransom of Rs 30 lakh. Police are also investigating the possibility of personal enmity between the two families as the reason for the kidnapping.

The other arrested person and Amit’s associate has been identified as Rahman.

Vashu had been found dead near a drain at Waziarabad, a day after the two had allegedly kidnapped him while he was playing outside his home in Brahmpuri Colony. The victim’s father runs a garments shop at north-east Delhi’s Mustafabad.

A police officer associated with the probe told Deccan Herald that among the probable reasons for Amit kidnapping Vashu are to demand ransom and then kill him for an enmity the two families had.

“He must have panicked after police began an intense search for the boy,” the officer said. However, more would be clear only after further interrogation, he said.
