1 killed, 2 hurt as retaining wall collapses

A day before the ‘Labour Day’ turned out to be a black day for the labourers working in a building site at Derebail, as one of their colleagues died and two others suffered injuries after a retaining wall collapsed, on Wednesday.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Kashyappa Fakeerappa Meti (30), a resident of Narayanapura in Bagalkot. The injured are Swami Naik and Shiva Naik, residents of Bellary. The injured have been admitted to a private hospital. Swami Naik has suffered severe injuries on his leg.

The incident occurred when six workers were levelling ground behind an under construction multi-storeyed building. The retaining wall behind the construction site collapsed while an earth mover was levelling the land. Kashyappa was trapped under the debris, while Swami and Shiv suffered injuries following the wall collapse.

Kashyappa and his wife had come to work at the site only two days ago. The couple have four children. It was a heart wrenching scene at the site as Kashyappa was the source of income for the family, who had come from far away place in search of employment.

Kavoor police said that a case has been registered. In fact, the police said that the site supervisors have failed to take any precautionary measures while taking up the work on levelling the land. Two years ago, a labourer was killed adjacent to the construction site in a similar mishap.
