'Spurned lover' throws hot oil on garment worker

A 22-year-old garment worker suffered severe burns on her face after her spurned lover threw hot oil on her while she was walking home in Mohan Kumar Nagar near Mathikere on Wednesday night.

Police said the suspect, aged 25-28, stalked Lavanya, the victim, as she was walking home. He first tried to speak to her but she remained unresponsive and did not stop. Moments later, the suspect opened a flask he was carrying and threw hot oil on her, police said, quoting passersby.

He then fled even as Lavanya writhed in pain and screamed for help. Passersby took her to hospital and alerted the police.

Lavanya was later taken to the St John’s Hospital as she suffered severe burns on the right side of the face.

“A  guy known to her is involved. She had rejected his unwelcome advances and even stopped talking to him.

He stalked her on Wednesday and proposed to her but she did not budge, infuriating him,” a senior police officer said, adding that the girl had given a statement against the suspect. He would be arrested soon, he added. Yeshwantpur police have registered a case.
