Flood relief not enough, says SHRC

“The Calamity Relief Fund distribution is inadequate and the amount allotted for damage of houses is not enough for proper rehabilitation," KSHRC chairman Justice S R Nayak said here on Wednesday. However, the commission’s intervention had made some difference in distribution of compensations by the government, Justice Nayak said. “Victims have now received compensation up to Rs three lakh whereas the government wanted to settle it for just Rs one lakh,” he said. He was addressing mediapersons to announce the celebration of the 61st anniversary of Human Rights Day to be celebrated on December 10.

Justice Nayak said the Commission registered more than 13,500 cases of which 3,002 were registered suo motu, and had successfully disposed 6,000 cases.  He expressed his unhappiness about the lack of office space and human resources for the commission since its formation in 2007. Of the 501 personnel sought by the Commission, only 81 staff had been sanctioned by the government. Currently, the commission had only 66 employees, of whom 44 were on contract and 22 on deputation.
