JOIN USTwo people were killed and 20 sustained injuries when a private bus fell into a stream between Vengalappana Tandya and Maralagonda villages in Magadi taluk on Sunday.
The victims are Manju Naika, 22, and Lakshmamma, 50, both residents of Vengalappana Tandya.
The injured — Radha, a resident of Navile village, Kempamma of Koudle village, Chandrashivayogi Swamy, Dakshayinamma, Narasimha Murthy, Andanappa and Vijay, all from Ippadi village, S Mahadev and Gangadhar — were taken to different hospitals in Bangalore for treatment, police said.
The accident was caused by reckless driving, passengers said. The bus was heading to Bangalore from Nagamangala.
The driver raised an alarm that the brake had given way when the bus approached the stream.
He then jumped out of the bus and fled the spot.
There was an electricity pole nearby and the bus would have caught fire had it collided with it, passengers said.
The police rushed to the spot and lifted the bus out of the stream with an earthmover.
