Last Updated 10 May 2014, 18:53 IST

Four members of a family from Bangalore allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at a lodge at the temple town of Kukke Subramanya in Dakshina Kannada district.

The deceased are Nanjundaiah, 45, his wife Jayalakshmi, 39, son Pavan, 13 and daughter Srilakshmi, 8. Nanjundaiah mentioned his address as Kilari Road, Rajajinagar, Bangalore, while checking in.

The cause for the suicide pact is yet to be ascertained, said the Sullia police. But preliminary investigation showed that loss in Nanjundaiah’s jewellery business prompted the family to commit suicide.

The room boys of SLR Residency at Kashikatte on the State highway grew suspicious when foul smell started coming out of the room on the fourth floor and informed the owner.

The room boys saw through the window, found all the four lying on a bed and alerted the police. The victims had come to Kukke for a ‘darshan’ of the deity and took a room on rent. They took ‘darshan’ on Wednesday and returned to the room.

They did not vacate it even after four days. It is said that a relative of the family had lodged a missing complaint with the Rajajinagar police in Bangalore. When contacted, the Rajajinagar police said that nobody had filed a missing complaint.
