PM to address nation on May 17

Bringing curtains down on a decade in power, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will give a farewell address to the nation on May 17, a day after the Lok Sabha results are announced on May 16.

In his address, the prime minister is likely to highlight the UPA government’s achievements over the ten-year period and will seek the new government’s co-operation for its continuity.

On May 17, the prime minister schedule will be packed, as in the morning he will hold his last Cabinet meeting. Soon after that he will meet President Pranab Mukherjee. In the afternoon, he will host high tea for Council of Ministers at his residence after which the President will be hosting a farewell dinner for them.

As Tuesday was the last working day of the prime minister at his South Block office, he was given a standing ovation by his staff during a farewell they hosted for Singh. Singh exchanged pleasantries with his 110 personal staff members and about 400 other peripheral staff members in South Block.

Singh expressed his gratitude towards them and the staff members returned the accolades by cheering him.
