<p>These are the men Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi depends on.<br /><br /></p>.<p>In the last few years, they worked for Modi behind the scenes by manoeuvering things for the chief minister.<br /><br />Modi’s chief principal secretary Kuniyil Kailashnathan, a 1979 batch IAS officer, is arguably the most trusted of them all.<br /><br />Commonly known as “KK”, he is one of the key men behind Modi’s political decision making process and it is through him that Modi controls the bureaucracy, according to sources.<br /><br />The other trusted aide is 1985 batch IPS officer A K Sharma, who now heads the crime branch in Ahmedabad.<br /><br />KK’s importance can be judged from the fact that after he retired on May 31, 2013, he was promptly appointed on a contractual basis for two years as the chief principal secretary. KK is learnt to have played a crucial role in charting out strategies for the last two Assembly elections in the state and has been involved in political liaisons on Modi’s behalf during the 2014 campaign as well. Observers pointed out that KK was instrumental in creating openings for the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate in Kerala.<br /><br />Sharma, on the other hand, has been the backbone in handling all cases against the Gujarat government in the Supreme Court.<br /><br />Many in the political circles believe if Modi had to handpick officers from Gujarat, the two officers would play a pivotal role.<br /><br />“Going by the experiences in the last few years, Modi, who trusts these officers immensely, will prefer to take them along with him or the other extreme being that they may be in the state to implement projects, the way Modi wants,” said a political analyst.<br /><br />While several bureaucrats are aspiring to go to Delhi, KK and Sharma are likely to be the two officers who will be by Modi’s side in the national capital.</p>
