Cop, 4 others held for abetting woman's suicide

A constable and his four associates were arrested by the Whitefield police in connection with the suicide of a woman.

The constable was identified as Somashekhar, attached to the Kumaraswamy Layout police station and a resident of Hebbal. The others are Ramu, Girish, Prakash and Jayalakshmi, said the police.

The death note left behind by Srikala, 30, led to the arrests as she had mentioned the names of four persons as responsible for her death, added the police.

Srikala allegedly hanged herself on Tuesday at her house at Immadahalli. On reaching home towards the evening, Srikala’s husband Muralikrishna found her hanging and informed the police.

Muralikrishna and Srikala owned a provision store in Moodalapalaya. They had closed the business due to financial crunch.

The couple availed themselves of a loan of Rs 10 lakh from a private financier, but failed to repay it on time. They moved from Moodalapalya to Immadihalli to run away from the financier and his possible harassment, said the police.

In the death note, the victim stated that Somashekhar and his associates kept harassing her and she was forced to take the extreme step as there was no way out.

She also mentioned that the constable and his men regularly extorted money from her, said the police.
