Neglected for long, statues in Cubbon Park to get facelift

The marble statues of five historical personalities installed in the Cubbon Park during the Raj are not safe.

Queen Victoria’s right forefinger has been cut and the sceptre in her right hand damaged while Chamarajendra Wadiyar has lost his right shade.

The statues of King Edward VII (installed in 1919), Major General Sir Mark Cubbon and K Seshadri Iyer (1913) have worn away. The grille around the statue of King Edward VII has been broken.

Given the sorry condition of the statues, the horticulture department has decided to give them a makeover.

It is planning to entrust the responsibility to the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath (CKP).

Deputy Director of Horticulture, Mahantesh Murugod, said he discovered the damage to the statues during an inspection. Thereafter, he discussed the matter with environmentalist and chairperson of Lalbagh and Cubbon Park Advisory Committee, A N Yellappa Reddy. “Reddy suggested that I get the CKP to restore the statues to their original glory,” Murugod told Deccan Herald.

“The priority would be to restore the statues of Queen Victoria (installed in 1906) and Chamarajendra Wadiyar (1927). All statues will be polished as their colour has faded away.”

The horticulture department will also seek suggestions from the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, Mysore, on restoring the statues.

Meanwhile, the horticulture department and the CKP will inspect the statues to decide on the steps to be taken for their restoration. Artist and Assistant Secretary of CKP, Kamalesh, said the Parishath would inspect the place within a week.

“Thereafter, we will submit a report to the horticulture department on the quantum of damage to the statues and steps needed for their restoration,” he said.

Sources in the horticulture department said the budget for the restoration would be chalked out soon. Work would start once the Director of Horticulture, D L Maheshwar, gives his approval, they added.
