Take care of your voice, say doctors

World Voice Day, 2014, was observed in the City on Wednesday. Free check-ups and awareness programmes at various health care institutions marked the observation.

Doctors who spoke about the importance of taking care of the voice box said that consulting a laryngologist (an ENT surgeon who specialises in voice) was an option that ought to be considered. They also spread awareness about a few problems associated with voice.

According to Dr Shantanu Tandon, Laryngologist, Sakra World Hospital, one of the most common, yet, often undiagnosed problem is laryngopharyngeal reflux.

He explained that it was a condition where acid from the stomach comes through the food pipe and into the larynx. “Acid reflux into the larynx may result in laryngitis, hoarseness, sensation of a lump in the throat, chronic throat clearing, excessive throat mucous, sore throat, cough and or throat pain,” a note from the hospital said.

Also, health camps were conducted across the City to commemorate World Voice Day.  Dr Chandra Sekhar of the Institute of Speech and Hearing offered free voice testing to all at the institute in Lingarjapuram on Wednesday.

Check-up camp

The JSS Institute of Speech and Hearing will conduct a free voice check-up camp to mark World Voice Day on Wednesday. The camp will be held between 9 am and 4 pm at the Department of Speech Language Pathology at the hospital premises.
