Jitan Ram Manjhi, the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe Welfare Minister in the outgoing Nitish Kumar Cabinet, will be the new chief minister of Bihar.

On Monday evening, he, along with Nitish, met Bihar Governor D Y Patil and formally staked claim to form a new government.

Earlier, sticking to his guns on the issue of quitting as chief minister, Nitish persuaded the Janata Dal (United) Legislature Party (JDULP) to accept his wish and elect a new chief minister.

“This election was fought under my leadership. I asked the people to give me my majdoori (wage) for the hard work I have done for the state. But the people refused. I have accepted the mandate, and therefore, resigned,” reiterated Nitish while addressing the JD(U) legislators at his residence.

The party MLAs reluctantly agreed to abide by his decision. Subsequently, Manjhi was elected JDULP leader. After meeting the governor, Nitish said letters of support from other legislators have been submitted to the governor.

“There is no threat to the government, as we enjoy the support of 117 party legislators, four Congress MLAs, one CPI legislator and two Independents,” said Nitish outside Raj Bhavan, adding that he would be the guiding force of the new JD(U) government.

The strength of the House has been reduced from 243 to 239 after three RJD MLAs quit on Sunday in support of Nitish and another MLA was disqualified by the Patna High Court. The halfway mark to secure majority is now 120.
