Always had the belief, says Sanga

“We have made an impressive start to the T20 series. But we knew we could make a comeback despite our crushing defeats in the Tests.

“We were reminding ourselves about our abilities, and we, Sri Lankans, are tough on and off the field,” Sangakkara told news men here on Friday, a day before the second match.
“We engaged in a lot of team sports like poker, cards game etc to keep our togetherness going after the Test series. As a captain, I know these guys inside out and their skills. To keep them motivated was not so heavy task for me and the team members also knew the importance of making a strong comeback after the Test defeats,” he added.

However, he warned against taking India lightly just because they had registered a comfortable win in the first T20. “We have to make a fresh start as the last match result counts for nothing now. You know, making a fresh start in Twenty20s is one of the toughest tasks because if you are a batsman and have done well in the previous game, you can take things lightly.

“Same theory goes for bowlers too, so you need to assess the situation and conditions before charting your game plan and that too in a much lesser time than Tests and T20s,” he noted.

On Lanka gaining momentum after their Nagpur victory, Sangakkara said, “Momentum is a bit of confidence, isn’t it? If momentum can be termed as confidence, yes, we have gained a lot of it after the Nagpur match. But against a side Iike India confidence alone will not do, you have to execute the plans properly to outpace them,” he said.
