Vettori ton powers Kiwis

Resuming at their overnight score of 47 for no loss, the Kiwis finished the second day on a highly satisfying note at 346/6, a handsome lead of 123 runs. Vettori, on 100, was at the crease along with Daryl Tuffey.

Pakistan, having managed a paltry 223, made huge amends with a fine bowling show led by Danish Kaneria. The leg-spinner accounted for four hosts’ batsmen reducing them to 145 for five and bowling Pakistan almost back into the game. The visiting bowlers, however, failed to make further inroads as Vettori combined with Brendon McCullum, who scored 89, to raise a 176-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Vettori and McCullum batted with great freedom without ever looking reckless to seize control of the game.

Pakistan earned the much-needed breakthrough when McCullum trying fend off a Umar Gul rising delivery put gully in business. Pakistan also had an opportunity to get rid of Vettori, but Kaneria dropped a straightforward return catch off him on 97.
