Knight Riders storm into IPL 7 final

Kolkata Knight Riders stormed into the final of IPL-7 with a comprehensive 28-run victory over Kings XI Punjab here on Wednesday night.

Chasing a competitive 164 in the Qualifier 1 at the Eden Gardens, Kings XI ended at 135 for eight in their 20 overs.

Kings XI will now travel to Mumbai to play Qualifier 2 where they will face Chennai Super Kings for a place in Sunday’s final. The Super Kings knocked out Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator in the night game at the Brabourne Stadium on Wednesday.

Asked to bat first with the threat of rain looming, Kolkata got off to a bad start when they lost skipper Gautam Gambhir (1) in the second over. But Robin Uthappa (42), enjoying a purple patch, and Manish Pandey (21) put on a 65-run stand which put KKR on the ascendancy.

But they slipped in the middle overs as Karanveer Singh (3/40), Mitchell Johnson (2/31) and Akshar Patel (2/11) all grabbed wickets.

A few lusty blows towards the end from Suryakumar Yadav (20) and Piyush Chawla (17 n.o) enabled Kolkata to cross the 160 mark.

Punjab had made child’s play of chasing down big totals in the league stages. However, delays due to rain and the absence of an anchor man at the top of the order meant they relied too much on the tried and the tested.

With panic setting in, they lost wickets in a heap to stumble to defeat.

In the other match, Mumbai made 173 for eight in their 20 overs with Lendl Simmons top-scoring with 67. Chennai scaled down the target in 18.4 overs. Suresh Raina led the way with an unbeaten 54.
