Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik are set to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to highlight the problems of their respective states. The meets are expected to boost the NDA’s plans to improve its tally in the Rajya Sabha.

A day after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley spoke to her, Jayalalitha, chief of the AIADMK, announced her meeting with the prime minister on June 3.

The move came in the wake of the BJP appearing keen on roping in the AIADMK into the NDA fold to keep the opposition divided and to shore up strength in the Rajya Sabha for passing key bills.

BJP sources did not rule out the possibility of Modi extending an invitation to Jayalalitha to join his government. The BJP is keen to rope in the AIADMK, which has 37 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 10 MPs in the Rajya Sabha.

Jaitley’s call to Jayalalitha on Thursday was to convey that the prime minister looked upon on her as a good ally of the government.

Though Jayalalitha boycotted Modi’s swearing-in ceremony on May 26, she had sent a letter to him, extending her good wishes while listing the pending issues of the state before the Centre.

According to a statement by the Tamil Nadu government, Jayalalitha would submit a memorandum to Modi, highlighting some issues of the state.

Jayalalitha boycotted Modi’s swearing-in ceremony to protest against Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s presence at the event. She had dubbed as “unfortunate” the invitation to Rajapaksa.

Earlier, Jayalalitha and Modi were on cordial terms as they attended each other’s swearing in ceremonies as chief ministers of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, respectively.
