SC extends Tejpal's interim bail till June 27

The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended the interim bail granted to Tehelka founder-editor Tarun Tejpal till June 27 but not before expressing displeasure over “red-tapism”, which prevented him from attending the last rites of his mother in Goa, despite an order for his release last month.

A bench of justices J S Khehar and C Nagappan allowed the plea put forth by former external affairs minister and senior advocate Salman Khurshid, who, representing Tejpal, contended that he was required to remain enlarged for performing certain ‘puja’ at his home.

The petitioner also claimed there was no violent act against the victim and there was a new law which could be used in the case. The 50-year-old journalist is accused of raping a female colleague, who claimed to be friend of his daughter.

A counsel appearing for Goa police opposed his plea saying that Tejpal had a brother who could perform prayers in commemoration of his 87-year-old mother. She had expired on May 18.
