You can keep the doctor away even in summer

It is important to eat healthy during summer and mix and match one’s diet with a  generous portion of fresh fruits, greens and seasonal vegetables.

 Lighter meals along with proper amount of fruits can help one stay hydrated and active all through the day.

One of the fruits that is a sure winner, summer or winner is the apple. Sink your teeth into a juicy, red or green one, or have it steamed and sugared or garnish your salad generously with it...apples are versatile and not surprisingly one of the most popular and frequently consumed fruits in the world. 

According to the spokesperson of Washington Apple Commission, which has an office in Gurgaon as well, “Its unique and amazing health benefits are difficult to overlook. Apples are rich in vitamins, minerals, and other elements too. Eating apples can help in preventing major diseases. Apples have 84 per cent of water, which keep the body hydrated. It not only satisfies your hunger but also satisfies your thirst as well. Apples are low in calories, fat free, sodium free, cholesterol free and full of fibre.”  In one sentence ‘full of nutrients and health benefits”.

Chef Adam Szczechura at Hyatt Regency, Gurgaon, said, “There are numerous dishes that can be made with apples as the core ingredient which are both savoury and sweet. It is served best in breakfast with vegetables like carrot, beetroot, celery or just as a juice.‎

Apples also form a core part of Bircher Muesli which is a popular breakfast dish based on raw rolled oats, grains, apples, dried nuts, and other fruits. One can also enjoy a light salad with a mixture of leaves, freshly grated apples and goat cheese‎or try classics like the Waldorf salad which is a combination of celery, apples and mayonnaise, with walnuts and raisins. As part of the main course one can try a braised red cabbage with‎apple or pork with an apple sauce. A refreshing apple sorbets can also be perfect for summers.”

Other apple recipes can be Sesame Apple Salad. This fresh and light salad has a mild nutty flavour with a hint of mint that complements the sweetness of the Fuji apple. Top it with a grilled chicken for a complete meal. Another favourite dish is Apples with Spiced Caramel and Mascarpone. It is a rich and luxurious snack. The combination of apples, cream, caramel and spice make this recipe a sure winner.

Dinesh Arora, managing director of ELF Cafe Lounge, Hauz Khas Village, said “Apple is a great cooking fruit and is the most versatile ingredient. So, it is easy to incorporate it in various baked food items, salads, sauces or stews. Like Empire is good for eating fresh or to be used in fresh salads. Granny Smith apple and Golden Delicious apple is something which should be used to make sauces and pies.”
