Legislative Council Chairman D H Shankarmurthy, on Thursday, said a project to instal 27 ft bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi between Vidhana Soudha and Vikas Soudha has been finalised.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will lay the foundation stone on Friday.

Briefing reporters, he said Gandhi’s statue will be in a meditative position, similar to the one in front of Parliament in New Delhi.

The project has been entrusted to Ram Sutar Arts Company, which has installed it at parliament premises. It is estimated to have cost Rs 11 crore.

The statue is planned to be unveiled on October 2, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi, he added.

He said it will be the biggest Gandhi statue in the world and installed on a 13 ft pedestal.

The statue was earlier planned to be of 12 ft height and the work was entrusted to a local sculptor from Theerthahalli.

But it was later thought that the height of the proposed statue should be compatible with the architecture of Vidhana Soudha and Vikas Soudha.
