Days after a BJP leader was slain in Greater Noida, another saffron party leader was gunned down by unidentified assailants on Tuesday in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district, about 500 km from here.

According to police sources, BJP district panchayat cell vice-president Omveer Singh was sprayed with bullets from behind near Nangla Khepad village by two gunmen on a motorbike. Singh belonged to Khepad village.

The BJP leader was on his way home when he was attacked. Singh tried to use his licensed revolver but was overpowered and shot at again with the same revolver by the killers. Sources said he was hit at least six times and he died on the spot. The killers then fled.

An irate mob later clashed with the police who tried to take the body for post-mortem, blocking the highway in protest. The body could be moved only after senior officials intervened and assured that the killers would be nabbed soon.

Although the motive for the killing remained unclear, family members of the slain leader suspect election rivalry to be behind the murder. Police said that it was investigating the matter. Security personnel in strength had been deployed in the area to maintain order, sources said.

BJP leader Vijay Bahadur Pathak condemned the killing and said that it reflected that a complete “jungle raj” prevailed in the state. “The state government has no moral right to continue in office,” he said.
