TN to recharge groundwater in Cauvery delta region

Last Updated 10 June 2014, 19:39 IST

Amid a controversy involving both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over the setting up of the Cauvery Management Board (CMB), the AIADMK government has planned to implement a Rs 117-crore water recharge scheme across the Cauvery delta region, including Trichy, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts.

The proposal was disclosed by the State Water Resources Department in the Madras High Court, while responding to a PIL seeking construction of check and storage dams across the river Kollidam to recharge the depleting water level in the Cauvery delta region.

The petition, filed by BJP national council member and advocate K Rajendran, said indiscriminate drawing of water from the Kollidam and Cauvery river beds for a distance of about 110 km was the major reason for water scarcity in the region.

In its response, the state government said it was planning to construct  61 check dams, grade walls and bed dams at a cost of Rs 117 crore across the branch rivers of Cauvery delta in Tamil Nadu.
