Tamil Nadu parties want Cauvery board

Opposition parties in Tamil Nadu including the DMK and the BJP’s ally MDMK on Sunday appealed to the prime minister to constitute the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) since the issue pending before the Supreme Court is no bar.

DMK president M Karunanidhi, in a letter to Modi, said “the issue pending before the Supreme Court is no bar to constitute the CMB because the apex court has not granted interim injunctions to the order passed by the Cauver Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT)”.

Karunanidhi said that immediately after the notification of the order passed by the CWDT, the ad hoc bodies constituted to supervise the implementation of the final award will be replaced by the CMB, which will continuously supervise the execution of the order.

“For the past three years ‘Kuruvai’ crop season in the delta region of the state had failed because of lack of water,” he said. Meanwhile, MDMK chief Vaiko said that it was the duty of the Centre to form the CMB since such a body was of utmost importance to implement its decision, which he recalled had been mentioned by Chief Minister Jayalalitha to Modi in a letter on Friday.

“Therefore, it is the duty of the Union government to constitute the CMB and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee to implement the final order of the Tribunal,” he said in the letter to Modi.
