The State government has ordered that the parents, who wish that their baby daughters should be considered for the Bhagyalakshmi scheme, should have mandatorily registered their marriages.

An order to this effect was issued by the State government on March 19, this year. This follows a recommendation in this regard by a committee of the legislature. Under the Bhagyalakshmi scheme, bonds worth Rs 20,000 are issued to girl children born in poor families.

Effective from April 1

These children get Rs one  lakh, when they attain the age of 18. The order is set to be effective from April 1, 2014.

According to the government order, parents of girl children are to mandatorily submit a copy of their marriage certificate to the authorities concerned, along with the application forms, while applying for the Bhagyalakshmi scheme.

To prevent atrocities

The government order is aimed at creating awareness among the public about the registration of marriages, and protecting married women from such atrocities committed by their in-laws as the destruction of the evidence of marriage.
