SC breather for Srinivasan

Last Updated 16 June 2014, 18:14 IST

The Supreme Court on Monday declined for the second time in less than a week a bid by the Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB) to rake up the issue of non-working BCCI president N Srinivasan contesting the International Cricket Council (ICC) presidential elections scheduled for June 27.

A bench of Justices Vikramjit Sen and Shiva Kirti Singh refused to entertain the plea raised by senior advocate Nalini Chidambaram on behalf of the CAB. She contended that a man facing inquiry could not be allowed to contest the ICC presidential polls. Counsel representing Srinivasan, however, pointed out that a similar plea was declined by the court on June 12. Chidambaram, on her part, contended that a mention was then made before the court but the judges could not see the final papers relating to the petition.  The bench was not impressed and said the matter could be taken up after vacations.

The apex court had on May 16 given the Justice Mudgal committee a fresh mandate to investigate allegations of corruption that emerged against Srinivasan and 12 others during its probe into betting and spot-fixing throughout the sixth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
