Gujarat varsity to admit third gender

They might be an ostracised community but this initiative could make their life better. Beginning this academic session, the Centre for Environment Planning and Technology (CEPT) University is offering admission even for the third gender.

The admission process, has already begun. It is expected that by word of mouth and awareness they will be able to draw some attention of the members of the third gender and make them feel inclusive.

The initiative has been taken after consultations with the members of the admission committee of the university and following the directive of the apex court.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Chairman of CEPT Admission Committee Subhrangsu Goswami said: “Our committee had been thinking about introducing the third gender option and had even gained the appreciation of the management and council members, when the SC order was pronounced.

“This strengthened our resolve and we decided to implement the decision beginning this academic year.’’

Goswami added that to check the credibility of students applying under this category, “CEPT has always asked all its students to submit a medical report  verified by a doctor. However, now onwards we will have a doctor in the campus to verify their claims.’’

He said they would also consider the option of including the doctor on-call option if required. CEPT officials also maintained that they will not disclose the identity of a student belonging to the third gender, unless the person wants it to be revealed. “Moreover, the documents submitted by all students are kept confidential, hence there is no chance of their details going public,’’ added Goswami.
