Congress workers stage protest against rail fare hike

'Modi cheated people by breaking his promise on price rise'

The Mangalore City North Block Congress Committee workers strongly condemned the Union government for steep hike in rail fare and demanded to pull back the decision at the earliest to avoid burden on common man. They also alleged Prime Minister Narendra Modi of cheating people by breaking his promise on price rise.

Addressing a protest against the Central government, regarding the issue, at Central railway station here, on Monday, senior Congress leader Suresh Ballal said that BJP mislead people that once Modi becomes the prime minister, good days will come.

But, just within 20 days after coming to power the NDA government has shown its true colours and sad days have started. Railway Minister D V Sadananda Gowda has increased passenger fares by 14.2 pc and freight rates by 6.5 pc, which will surely increase the prices of daily commodities. The petrol and diesel prices have been increased already and now the government is seriously thinking about LPG price hike by Rs 10. This is first gift of the Modi government,” he mocked.

“Though the Railway Minister says that the decision is pro-people and it would help in improving quality of railway service, the fact is that the poor can’t tolerate if the fare is too high. Unfortunately, Modi government is making railway costlier and air travelling cheaper. The days are not far when people would regret for choosing Modi government,” he said.

Conspiracy against Cong

Another Congressman G A Bava said that though NDA has clarified that it merely gave a go ahead to the price hike decision of UPA government, former railway minister Mallikarjuna Kharge has given clarification that the proposal was waiting for discussion and the NDA government has taken the decision in a hurry.

In the State, when Yedyurappa government came to power, he blamed Congress for everything. It is a kind of conspiracy against Congress to bring bad name to the party and an idea to get their work done. When they change the Governors, they can definitely change the decisions of previous government, he said.

He also questioned PM Narendra Modi’s promise over providing security to women. Though it is Congress government in UP, many rape incidents have registered in several other parts of the country like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan etc, during NDA rule. One of the ministers in Modi’s cabinet is facing rape charge, he alleged.

He was also against making Hindi compulsory in government offices, especially in non-Hindi speaking states.

Congress workers stopped Bhatkal- Mangalore Express train in protest against rail fare hike. They submitted a memorandum to Railway Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, on the same, through Station Manager P K Shivadasan.

Congressmen Vishwas Kumar Das, B G Suvarna, Corporator Radhakrishna and others were present.
