Town Hall to get a Rs 5-crore facelift

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike on Wednesday launched the renovation of Puttanna Chetty Town Hall building located on J C Road.

The total cost of the project is around Rs five crore. The renovation work includes new seating arrangements, flooring, automated computer-controlled efficient lighting system, designing of a sound reinforcement system, among others.

Mayor Satyanarayana said: “The Town Hall is in a bad shape. Basic technical facilities, seatings, control room facilities, etc, were installed almost 23 years ago. It was last renovated in 1990 by the Public Works Department. Hence, we decided to refurbish it and provide it with modern facilities.”

The Palike officials said a detailed project report had been prepared by Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited and the work will be executed by Sanjay Marketing and Publicity Services, a private firm. The agency has even consulted a few theatre personalities to get their suggestions for  preparing the report.

“The firm will operate and maintain the Town Hall building for a period of five years. The work will be taken up in a phased manner depending on the availability of funds,” said BBMP Commissioner M Laxminarayana who was present at the renovation launch event.
Palike sources said they had been planning to execute the project since three years, but they were unable to do it due to financial constraints.

Ruling BJP leader in the BBMP Council, Ashwath Narayana Gowda, said the Palike would soon meet theatre personalities such as Girish Karnad and Arundhati Nag to get their inputs for stage arrangement and interior designing of the auditorium. “We want to complete the work before August 15,” he said.
