Gas leaks kill 11 in Kanpur, Gujarat shipyard

Suspected gas leaks claimed 11 lives at Kanpur and in district Bhavnagar of Gujarat, while several others were injured.

Six were killed and 19 injured—four of them critically—when a fire broke out following leakage in a gas cylinder in Chamanganj of Kanpur on Friday, said the police on Saturday.

Chamanganj-resident, Anil, had allegedly kept a leaking gas cylinder inside a water tank at a public toilet, said a police spokesman. As the tank was empty, the leakage continued and spread. Meanwhile, someone entered the toilet and lit a cigarette, which triggered the blaze, he added. An inquiry has been ordered.

In Bhavnagar, five people were killed and seven injured after a fire broke out following a blast in a ship being dismantled at the Alang Shipyard. Prima facie, the blast occurred due to sudden gas leakage when ship-breaking activity was in progress.
