New IIMB director to take charge today

Dr Sushil Vachani, former professor of strategy and innovation at Boston University, will take charge as the new director of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB), on Tuesday.

Dr Vachani will succeed Prof Pankaj Chandra who was the director of the IIMB from December 2007 to September 2013.

The post is temporarily held by Devanath Tirupathi, professor of production and operations management and dean (academic), IIMB.

Dr Vachani’s name for the post was recommended by Mukesh Ambani, chairperson and managing director, Reliance Industries, and former chairman of the Board of Governors, IIMB, last year, after Chandra declined the offer for a term extension.

Dr Vachani completed his Bachelors of Technology (BTech) from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, and thereafter did a Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) at IIM, Ahmedabad.

Later, he received a doctorate in international business from the Harvard Business School.

In addition to his 28 years at Boston University, he has worked with the Boston Consulting Group in the US as well as with companies like Philips, Tata Administrative Service and Tata Motors in India.

He also served in a number of important positions in organisations such as the International Management Programme in Japan.

Vachani’s areas of interest include global institutional environment of business, multinational government relations, corporate social responsibility, climate change, impact of NGO’s on international business.
